3.17.12 Demo painting for Lovetts

My demo painting...

During the opening of the "Out on a Whim" exhibit at Lovetts Gallery on March 17, 2012 I will be working in the gallery on this painting above. The piece isn't quite ready for paint yet but since the demo isn't until Saturday I will have plenty of time to finish the under drawing on my way out to Tulsa, Oklahoma. And even though it isn't done yet I can already start feel the nice deep shadows of the "I" beam and the great textures of the rusted metal. Yes! More rusted metal!

The reference for this painting came from my visit to Tulsa last March when a friend and I went out in the eastern fields of Tulsa looking for different and interesting things that I could paint. And now that I am headed back to Tulsa for the opening of the exhibit I thought it was a great time to start painting this particular piece.

By now you are probably asking yourself what is the Wren perched on? Any thoughts?

Tight traditionalism...

From Lovetts Gallery recent newsletter...

Out on aWhim - Robert Louis Caldwell & Janice Sugg
Exhibition Opening and Live Painting Demonstration - Saturday, March 17th, 10:00-5:00

LovettsGallery is excited to bring together two artists that share a love for complex texture and wondrous wildlife, but also approach their subjects through disparate perspectives and techniques.  Realist wildlife painter RobertLouis Caldwell, of Virginia, will be joined by Colorado based contemporary western landscapist JaniceSugg for Out on a Whim, an exhibition of new works at Lovetts Gallery.  This exhibition will be accompanied by live painting demonstrations with both artists at the opening on Saturday, March 17th.

Having represented both of these artists for a few years, we anticipate a great dialogue between the tight traditionalism of Birds in Art veteran Robert Caldwell and the uncontained and expressive strokes and scrapes of austere western landscapist Janice Sugg.  In close proximity, it seems as if each artist's work is a natural response to the other.

Beginning at 10:00 on Saturday, March 17th, artists Robert Louis Caldwell and JaniceSugg will be exhibiting more than 20 new works, including a Scissor-tail offering by each artist, created specifically for Lovetts Gallery's Outon a Whim exhibition.   In addition to the exhibition of new works, both artists will be producing works live in the gallery from 10:00 to 5:00.  This opportunity to participate in the artists' creations has proven to be one of the most desired and rewarding experiences offered by Lovetts Gallery.  We hope to see you here!  Of special note, for those of you who have followed Robert's career, his first show with Lovetts in 2010 SOLD OUT.  His show in 2011 was one piece shy of sold out.  In 2012...you get the hint!

The public is invited to join Robert Louis Caldwell, Janice Sugg, and Lovetts Gallery for the opening of Out on a Whim on Saturday, March 17th, between 10:00-5:00.

Exhibition runs through April 17th.
