I have the honor to announce that my graphite drawing “Contemplation (Chimpanzee)” has been selected for inclusion in this year’s exhibit Art of the Animal Kingdom XV. The Art of the Animal Kingdom exhibit is held annually at the Bennington Center for the Arts in Bennington, Vermont. “Contemplation” is one of eighty pieces that was chosen from hundreds of submissions. Morten Solberg is this year’s guest artist who is also the juror for the show, it is quite an honor to be juried into an exhibit by ones artistic peer. In addition to being the guest artist Morten will also be teaching a workshop June 9th – 11th.

“Contemplation (Chimpanzee)” is a graphite drawing on Arches 300lb. hot press water color paper. As with all of my graphite drawings the value is built layer by layer starting from the hardest grade pencil (6H) to the softest grade (9B). This is simply accomplished with patience and delicately adding the graphite to the paper and no erasing. The Chimpanzee in this drawing is a primate from the Metro Richmond Zoo just outside of Richmond, Virginia in Moseley, Virginia. Last summer I spent the day at the Zoo gathering new reference of the animals that are at this zoo and this chimpanzee just sat there for about two hours. It had this look of concentrating with all its might, trying to discover the ansewer to problems of the world. Well I don’t know if the chimpanzee ever discovered the answer to its question and if it did it’s keeping the answer to itself but I left the zoo knowing I was going to draw that moment. The long composition on the drawing I felt was necessary to illustrate the depth of the chimpanzee’s contemplation.

Once again I am extremely honored to be included in this year’s Art of the Animal Kingdom exhibit at the Bennington Center for the Arts.
