Go and Paint Another!

Image
“Feigned Innocence” Oil on ½” Gessoed Maple Panel 16 x 10 It is always a fantastic day in the studio when you receive an email from one of your galleries informing you that a painting has sold and your payment is on the way. I am always honored that someone decided to purchase one of my paintings to hang on their walls, but I think of it as the highest compliment an individual can give an artist. When purchasing a piece of art, you are telling that artist to go and paint another. Thank you to Lovetts Gallery in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for once again helping one of my pieces to find its home, you are all the best, and I love working with you, Detail image 1 This painting was inspired by a photography reference trip to Yellowstone a few years back with my friend and fantastic artist Julie Bender . We were driving one of the many roads in Yellowstone looking for wildlife to photograph when we came around a corner and saw this little Red Fox trotting down the road. We immediately turned ar...

Opening this Saturday! “The Lollipop Guild” Invitational Miniatures Show Lovetts Gallery Tulsa, Oklahoma JUNE 20 - JULY 20, 2015 I cordially invite you to "The Lollipop Guild" show at Lovetts Gallery in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 20, 2015! All art exhibited in this show will pull inspiration from the beloved classic “The Wizard of Oz.” I am excited to exhibit two pieces in the show that are small in size but big in inspiration. The Scarecrow. "Abstract Thought (Raven) " Graphic Pencil on 1/2 in. Maple panel 8 x 16 $1,500.00 This piece is one of two I created for the themed show “The Lollipop Guild” at Lovetts Gallery in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Inspired by the classic movie “The Wizard of Oz,” I wanted to create a piece based on the Scarecrow character and would have never guessed how difficult it would be to find a scarecrow for my reference. I still hadn’t found my needed scarecrow as I headed out to Tulsa for my e...

A zebra “traffic jam!”

Image
NEW Painting! "Before and After (Zebras)" Oil on 1/2 in. Maple panel    16 x 12 Available through Lovetts Gallery Tulsa, Oklahoma 918.664.4732 The idea for this painting emerged one evening while I was sketching a zebra that I had spotted near the Silale swamp road in Tanzania, Africa. It was actually one of many zebra that I had seen that morning during a zebra “traffic jam.” The road next to Silale swamp runs pretty straight along the edge of the marsh, and the zebra were using the road as their route to a watering hole. As far as you could see, the zebra were nearly stacked one on top of another like dominoes, but they were kind enough to open a path so that we could drive through the herd. We slowly made our way to the head of the column as the zebra continued their journey, hardly paying us any attention at all. I seized the moment to capture reference photos from different vantage points and lighting angles but this particular scene, with the zeb...

Waterpump painting - progress

Image
Here is a sneak peek into the current painting that I have on my easel. Most of the reference for this particular piece came from a visit to Tulsa Oklahoma around two/three years ago. I was out visiting and exploring the country side with a collector friend of mine when he told me about this old water pump he had and after seeing it I knew I wanted to paint it! Progress to date... I am currently on the second layer of color, background is finished and I am currently working on the galvanized metal textures of the pump. This painting will be unveiled at an upcoming show at Lovetts Gallery in Tulsa, Oklahoma during the first weekend in November.

One of Caldwell’s best works!

Image
Wow!!! Below is a review on Lovetts Gallery's blog about my recent painting that I shipped to them late last week, I am speechless! A Little Rusty Robert Louis Caldwell doesn’t paint anything he hasn’t seen in person. “Every time he's been to the gallery, he goes out taking reference photos,” says Jack. In fact, he’s been saving for a trip to Africa . “Robert has been raising funds to take his trip to Tanzania in four or five weeks. He was hoping he would be able to raise enough funds to go for 14 days,” says Jack. “He had to shorten his trip. He’s never been to Africa. That’s a monumental trip for any wildlife artist. He was so committed to going that he shortened his trip so he could go no matter what. “When he returns, he’ll be working primarily on African safari paintings, because, again, he’ll only paint what he’s seen in person.” Until then, however, he’s working on more local subjects. On a trip to Lovetts Gallery in 2010, he photographed a counte...

3.17.12 Demo painting for Lovetts

Image
My demo painting... During the opening of the " Out on a Whim " exhibit at Lovetts Gallery on March 17, 2012 I will be working in the gallery on this painting above. The piece isn't quite ready for paint yet but since the demo isn't until Saturday I will have plenty of time to finish the under drawing on my way out to Tulsa, Oklahoma. And even though it isn't done yet I can already start feel the nice deep shadows of the "I" beam and the great textures of the rusted metal. Yes! More rusted metal! The reference for this painting came from my visit to Tulsa last March when a friend and I went out in the eastern fields of Tulsa looking for different and interesting things that I could paint. And now that I am headed back to Tulsa for the opening of the exhibit I thought it was a great time to start painting this particular piece. By now you are probably asking yourself what is the Wren perched on? Any thoughts?

Tight traditionalism...

Image
From Lovetts Gallery recent newsletter... Out on aWhim - Robert Louis Caldwell & Janice Sugg Exhibition Opening and Live Painting Demonstration - Saturday, March 17th, 10:00-5:00 LovettsGallery is excited to bring together two artists that share a love for complex texture and wondrous wildlife, but also approach their subjects through disparate perspectives and techniques.  Realist wildlife painter RobertLouis Caldwell , of Virginia, will be joined by Colorado based contemporary western landscapist JaniceSugg for Out on a Whim , an exhibition of new works at Lovetts Gallery .  This exhibition will be accompanied by live painting demonstrations with both artists at the opening on Saturday, March 17th . Having represented both of these artists for a few years, we anticipate a great dialogue between the tight traditionalism of Birds in Art veteran Robert Caldwell and the uncontained and expressive strokes and scrapes of austere western landscapist J...
